Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL,
Are there any coaches liked less than Ron Wilson? His comments about Team Canada after their Olympic victory against his American squad have put him under the spotlight and fans are calling for his head. Now back as the head honcho of the last-place team in the Eastern Conference, Wilson is once again just the most recent of a string of Leaf coaches who are going through rough times. The three worst records in the NHL belong to the Hurricanes, Leafs, and Oilers. With a combined record of 63-100-24, all three have more than just that in common. The three coaches are the three most recent heads of the Maple Leafs.

If you were asked to name the greatest players of all-time, would Joe Nieuwendyk make your list? He’s one of those players who played exactly at the right time in his era, and could carry a team if needed, but rarely did he need to. He was born and raised in the Durham Region just east of Toronto. Nieuwendyk was one of the best lacrosse players in his country before he turned his attention to the ice. He has enjoyed success at every level of the game, from NHL to internationally to the front office.

The unknown Norris has done more than you think

The NHL is a man’s league. It’s hard to argue that point. If you were asked to name two female NHL players ever, you wouldn’t be able to do it, because there’s only been one, Manon Rheaume, and even that was a pre-season publicity stunt that the Tampa Bay Lightning pulled off for publicity. However, hockey has had its share of women behind the scenes, perhaps none of which are more noteworthy than former president of the Detroit Red Wings, Marguerite Norris.

Lincecum, Giants reach two-year deal
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,
San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum is staying put. The hurler came to a two-year agreement with the Giants and avoided salary arbitration with the club and will instead put his focus towards Spring Training and the 2010 Major League Baseball season. The anticipation of having Lincecum become available on the open market will cease as the ever-improving Giants hope to make a real push towards the postseason and potentially the World Series this year, lead by their young star pitcher.

Bob Gainey’s time in Montreal is over. He stepped down as general manager of the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, which is just the latest in a series of blows to the Canadiens organization as they celebrate their centennial year. This was a move that many say was planned well in advance by Gainey, and that if he wanted to, he could have stayed with the club as GM for years to come. But for Gainey, a Canadien for life, that wasn’t in the cards.

Team Canada going for gold
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, Olympics,
The Winter Olympics in Vancouver officially begin this Friday. The event’s most anticipated event, the men’s ice hockey tournament, starts on Feb. 16. Team Canada takes on Norway in their first game of a tournament that many Canadians not only hope, but expect will be a moment of national pride. Canada GM Steve Yzerman has assembled an all-star roster, but the most important of those might be his coaches. Leading Canada will be head coach Mike Babcock and assistant coaches Jacques Lemaire, Ken Hitchcock, and Lindy Ruff. These are the guys who will be held most accountable for Canada’s success, or possible lack thereof.

Blockbuster breakdown: Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames were part of the first of two bold trades involving the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. The blockbuster trade saw the Flames give up defensive strongman Dion Phaneuf, as well as right winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie. In exchange, they picked up forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, and defenseman Ian White. Calgary’s offensive woes have plagued them in January, and the addition of three mid-level forwards, they hope to provide a shot of adrenaline that will carry them through the playoffs.

Blockbuster breakdown: Anaheim Ducks

As part of Sunday’s blockbuster trades, Ducks GM Bob Murray added a couple of key pieces from Toronto to his struggling team. The Ducks picked up forward Jason Blake and goaltender Vesa Toskala. Blake is the key piece for Anaheim as they’ll try to make a late push to grab a playoff spot from one of the other slumping teams in the West. They had to give up former Stanley Cup winner and current backup goaltender J.S. Giguere to get them, which in their eyes was a bargain.

It seems blockbuster trades aren’t entirely a thing of the past in the NHL. But it took a blockbuster GM like Toronto’s Brian Burke to do it. With two colossal trades on Sunday, Burke added defensemen Dion Phaneuf, winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie from Calgary, giving up forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, and defenseman Ian White. The second deal sent forward Jason Blake and goalie Vesa Toskala to the Ducks in return for goaltender J.S. Giguere.
